About
About Living Root
Living Root is an independent online magazine about the everyday foundations of good health after 40. We publish plain-language articles grounded in guidance from public health institutions, for readers who want substance without hype.
What we believe
Good health in the second half of life is rarely the product of dramatic changes. It grows from a few deep roots, tended patiently over years: sleep, movement, food, daylight, strength, attention, and the people around us. None of those is exciting. All of them hold up. Living Root exists to describe those roots clearly, to explain what public health research actually says about them, and to show how an ordinary person can work them into an ordinary week.
The name comes from that idea. A living root is not visible, not fast, and not glamorous. It is simply what keeps everything above the ground standing.
What we cover
- Foundations: Sleep, food, water, and walking: the daily basics that hold everything else up.
- Outdoors: Daylight, gardens, and the case for spending more of the day outside.
- Body: Strength, balance, and keeping the body capable for the long run.
- Mind: Memory, attention, mood, and the people who keep us well.

Who we write for
Our readers are mostly in their forties, fifties, sixties, and beyond. Many are managing a full life, some are caring for parents or grandchildren, and most have read enough health headlines to be tired of them. We design for those readers: large type, high contrast, short sections, no autoplay, no pop-ups, and a tone that respects the intelligence of someone who has been an adult for decades.
How we work
Articles are researched, written, and edited by the Living Root editorial team. We rely on primary guidance from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and Mayo Clinic, and we list those sources at the end of every article. We use conditional language because that is how the evidence stands, and we correct our mistakes in public. Our Editorial Policy describes all of this in detail.
How we keep our independence
- Advertising supports the site and is kept separate from editorial decisions. Sponsored content, when it appears, is labeled. See our Advertising Disclosure.
- Topics, sources, and wording are decided by the editorial team alone.
- Our articles are general information for adults, written to be read alongside a conversation with your healthcare provider, never instead of one.
- We write in conditional language, cite figures only from named institutions, and never use fear to hold your attention.
- Our illustrations are original graphics, and our articles are written by the editorial team rather than built around individual profiles or photographs.
